How hypnosis can help with chronic pain.

By Joanne Reeves-Baker BSc Pych hons HPD

Joanne was herself a sufferer of chronic pain from Endometriosis, Adenomyosis and PCOS and says that “ There is no question that learning the art of hypnosis was the first thing that stopped me from killing myself.

Hypnosis and Pain Management; an ancient technique when modern medicine has no answer.

We live in a world of wonders, of medical miracles, where technological leaps are a normal way of life.  We have grown to expect that doctors will always have an answer, that there is always a ‘little pill’ that can be taken to make everything all right.

In a world where there is always an answer, what do you do when the answer is “we can’t do anything”?

When pain killers simply don’t work, more and more people are turning to hypnosis as an effective alternative. For me

“As time goes on, the less sessions you need, as you learn the techniques the quicker you can put yourself under, the more in control you have of your mind and body.Amy

Hypnotic Trance, Hypnotherapy and Self-Hypnosis are becoming recognised more and more as a more gentle and effective treatment for pain; especially for conditions that are chronic or acute, such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, endometriosis, and back pain to name but a few.

Hypnosis and Self Hypnosis have long been used to manage pain, indeed you may have heard about people who undergo surgery using hypnosis rather than use anaesthesia. Before the advent of anaesthetic, hypnosis was frequently used as a natural sedative for surgical procedures in the 1800s.  In different forms it has been used all over the globe, even dating back to the bronze age in ancient Greece.

How it works is actually very simple. The way we perceive physical sensations is directly linked with the way our mind responds to pain.  Pain, or worrying about pain, triggers fear, anxiety, despair, and hopelessness.  These stressful emotional reactions can exacerbate the reaction to pain, especially when it makes your muscles tense up and constrict.

Hypnosis is a tool to train and teach our mind to respond in different ways.

One of the problems with acute or chronic pain is the feedback loop the neurological system goes through.  To put it simply, when we feel pain, the neuron or pain receptor gets activated. The more often it gets activated, the stronger or quicker the reaction is. It’s a vicious circle.

At its most basic level, hypnosis teaches the mind and body to relax. This includes relaxing the nervous system, pain receptors, the nerves, the muscles, the area surrounding the pain. The more adept you become at deep relaxation the more your mind can disconnect from the pain reaction.

“I learnt how to enter a state of very deep trance, in this state I could remove myself from the pain signals that my body was experiencing.” Joanne

At a more proficient level, with the guidance of a professional hypnotherapist, hypnosis uses imagery to not only relax, but also to reduce the level of pain. The subconscious mind responds very positively to imagery to help it make sense of the world.  For example, imagining pain like boiling sea and then imagining yourself safe on a pier, creating a distance from the pain.

In another example, imagine having a pain dial which you have the ability to change the setting that your body is experiencing. Say a dial which can shift from a 10 to a 7. Thus reducing the level of pain experienced. This is a skill which is invaluable for people who suffer from permanent painful conditions.

The subconscious mind responds very positively to imagery to help it make sense of the world

Hypnosis will never eradicate pain, pain is there for a reason, to tell your brain that something is wrong and we ignore it at our peril.  However, with cases of chronic or acute pain, when we understand why the pain is happening and how we can support the body in the best possible way (by also looking at lifestyle, diet, exercise etc.), then the brain will find it acceptable to turn that dial from a 10 to a 7, or even lower.

“Learning this skill not only helped my pain, but gave me a tool to survive the emotional fall out.” (Private Client)

When you practice entering the deep relaxed state of trance there are many other benefits: reduced blood pressure, less anxiety, feeling more in control, more chilled, all of which benefit YOUR day to day life.  What else would you be doing if pain wasn’t getting in the way?

My friends say I am back to my old self” Emma

Hypnosis has the potential to offer a drug free, hospital free way to deal with your pain.

pain management with self hypnosis

If like me, you have found that living with a condition that causes chronic or acute pain because pain killers simply don’t work.

A hot water bottle doesn’t work, yoga positions won’t work, it can seem like nothing will work.

Over the past 20 years I have worked with people of all ages to help manage pain and take back control of their lives.

We do this by training the incredible power of your mind, via the ancient art of trance and self-hypnosis, which can change your experience of pain and how you can manage your life.

On this training I will share my top pain management technique that you can implement right away!

By the end of my Pain Management with Self Hypnosis Course you will have learnt two important and effective meditations which will change how you cope with the difficulties of living a life in pain:

  1. To be able to put yourself into a deep trance, which allows you to disconnect from the experience of pain that your body is feeling.
  2. To reduce the level of pain that you experience on a daily basis.

Mastering These techniques removes the despair, loneliness and frustration that is so common and so hard to overcome when you live with pain on a daily basis.

We will explore the triggers, both mental and physical, that are making it harder to manage your pain and learn how to adjust your lifestyle to better support, manage and reduce the pain.

Hypnosis and Pain Management; an ancient technique when modern medicine has no answer.

This training is designed to be practised at home so that you can start using the techniques as quickly as possible with:

An indepth 6 session training course, delivered virtually, at a time of your choosing.

MP3 guided trance meditation for daily practice at home.

Fee £360 or £70 x 6

EndometriosisI am delighted to offer this course at a low cost to you, it is a skill I learnt many years ago and is the only reason that I survived the despair of the chronic pain I used to experience as a sufferer of endometriosis and adenomyosis.

I look forward to sharing this skill with you and seeing you on the course!

Hypnotherapy Testimonial
“At the age of 18 when I was first offered the chance of doing hypnotherapy, I turned it down. How could it possibly be good enough to help manage and control the amount of pain I was in? I had been on some of the strongest drugs and treatments and they had barely scratched the surface. In my mind hypnotherapy was some weird hippy who would have control of my mind and have me dancing around like a chicken, not something that could change my life.
But a year or two later, my life was an existence and not a life. I had exhausted all options to keep my pain under control, and had nothing to lose in giving it a try. I have never felt counselling successful, always just feeling like a case number rather than a person with traumas and experiences, so when I started my therapy at Joanne’s house, I already felt myself becoming at ease, being away from hospitals, or clinics, away from doctors in uniforms. I was met with warmth and kindness and was asked about myself as a person, not just as my pain and illness.
The first few sessions were used to build rapport, and start to introduce techniques, which I was yet to know were skills in which I would use up until today, ten years later, and in many aspects of my life.
As the weekly sessions went on I found myself not only being able to manage my pain, but to overcome mental obstacles which had haunted me for most of my life so far. My family, who had seen me waste away for years, not being able to leave the house, barely be able to walk, and never go anywhere by myself, they started to see the sparkle back in my eyes. Start to rediscover who I was and become the person who I was meant to be.
You see, Hypnotherapy isn’t someone else performing some trick to control you and magic the pain away, it’s a technique which allows you to dive deep into your mind, body and soul and enables you to be in control of it. Untie the physical pain to the emotional pain, but also to listen to what your body truly wants and needs. It is a way of being in such a deep state of hypnotherapy, of meditation and relaxation that you are completely separate from your body, that you can have a break from the pain, that you can put it to one side, even just for a moment. Which is the biggest relief when it is something you suffer with every minute of every day.
As time goes on, the less sessions you need, as you learn the techniques the quicker you can put yourself under, the more in control you have of your mind and body.
Simply put, it is a drug free, pain free, hospital and doctor free way of enabling yourself to gain control of the pain in your life. It becomes just a part of who you are rather than your existence. The more time and effort and homework you put in, the more successful you will become at achieving better control.
I use hypnotherapy in my life regularly, for pain, anxiety, depression. I used it in the birth of my daughter, for insomnia. So many aspects. I truly feel it is a life skill that I now wouldn’t be able to live without. Every now and then I still have to dip in for a session with Joanne. I not only feel she is my hypnotherapist, but my guide, my mentor, and a friend. She has been a crutch in situations that I thought I wouldn’t be able to escape, not only by being there with invaluable advice and guidance, but for reminding me of the strength and power within myself.
I will always encourage others to do hypnotherapy, but especially pain management. It is a skill as I have mentioned that will take you through your life. Thank you Joanne, for allowing me to have mine back.”

The Lady Vanishes

A lesson in bravery and speaking up.

A core part of my courage work is to enable women to Speak Up, usually as part of their business marketing model. Naturally this skill swiftly follows into all areas of life as these empowered ladies have discovered and trained themselves in the art of Speaking Their Truth, from the heart, unapologetically without confrontation.  It is a skill that comes in handy from resolving family disagreements to getting the decorator to paint the hallway that way you want it, not the way they want it.

I was watching a remake of the Alfred Hitchcock film The Lady Vanishes this weekend on Netflix.  (I do love a good old fashioned thriller/who done it.)  I was struck by one line at the end of the film delivered to the heroine Iris Henderson.

“Not speaking out is dangerous ….. it was very fortunate for me that you already knew the importance of speaking out.”

It was interesting as the heroine is quickly set up in the initial scenes as, well not all that likeable.  She has a strong independent personality and that English Imperialism of the time which is uncomfortable to witness. Lots of “why doesn’t everyone speak English” and rude ignoring of her fellow travelers’ conversations and interactions with her.  This was a woman who simply spoke her mind, regardless of how such rudeness would be received. She didn’t care what anyone might think of her as a result, she simply looked out for her own best interests and didn’t waste time on anything else. Of course in the film, this rudeness backfired on her but that’s not what caught my attention.

Iris always spoke her mind and did so fearlessly.  This is what made her dig her heels in and not sit quietly by.  She went out of her way to cause trouble and to get involved. It was the same trait that made her be rude which gave her the courage and conviction to carry on being a nuisance.  She was one woman, on a train of many, faced with being labelled hysterical and insane.  She continued to speak out, to speak her mind and inevitably to save the day.

As a society we are slowly emerging from a long held belief in ‘minding one’s own business’.

It is a recently as the 21st Century that what happened in the home was not the concern of anyone.  It didn’t matter what kind of beatings or cruelty were going on, neighbours and friends simply didn’t mention it.   It was nearly the end of the century before the police were able to arrest someone for domestic violence without the victim pressing charges.  Nearly 100 years to turn that culture around.  I have a colleague who spent her late youth/early teens living with a paedophile who would pick her up from school every day and yet the culture of the time meant that everyone turned a blind eye.

It is still this culture of ‘keeping out of it’ which means that cruelty persists in all levels of society, whether it is  children, animals, men or women.  We don’t want this cruelty to be happening and yet standing up, pointing a finger and saying that’s not acceptable still takes courage.

Why should we care if we get judged for speaking out?

Women have a long history of violence for speaking out.

I think there is a deeper and  primeval reason why we think twice before speaking up.  There is a fear of violence being turned on us.  This is especially true for women, with such a long, horrific history of what happens to women who dare to speak their minds and speak against the pervading opinion.  Labelled insane, locked up in asylums, put on trial as a witch, beaten, the perils were very real for a very long time.

I think the fear of violence is real, but the likelihood of violence is over estimated in our minds.

We all know that bullies will back down when confronted.

Well we probably don’t want to be considered rude.  It is important to think about how you are going to speak up, with what kind of language, with that tone of voice and with what kind of outcome.

We don’t have to be like Iris, speaking out and putting yourself first doesn’t have to be done rudeness.  If you don’t go looking for a confrontation than the chances are you won’t find one.   Speaking out is not about enforcing your opinion, it is about opening a dialogue.

  • Have you thought about it from this point of view?
  • This is what I have observed
  • Can you explain why that is happening
  • That doesn’t seem acceptable to me
  • For me it is about

The difference now, in the 21st Century, is that we can speak up without rudeness, and with compassion.  You might not convert everyone you have a conversation, but you never know what little shifts might happen in someones mind.

It also gives you the fire and trust in your ability to get you out of a situation where you could be on the receiving end of being bullied, or bantered with, or put upon.

We won’t always win when we speak up, but you never know who you might influence little by little.

We change the world through the courage of our convictions and our convictions will only be heard if we speak up and keep speaking up.
